Jackson receives truck for inmate litter removal efforts

JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) – On June 17, Mississippi Transportation Commission Chairman Willie Simmons presented Jackson Mayor John Horhn and Hinds County Sheriff Tyree Jones with a truck to be used for inmate litter removal efforts.

“I am happy to present Mayor Horhn and Sheriff Jones with a truck to be utilized for litter removal. In addition, we will reimburse you up to $50,000 for providing detainee supervision during litter removal,” said Simmons. “We are actively working together to make sure that Hinds County and the City of Jackson are beautiful places to come and visit.”

During the pickups, the Hinds County Sheriff’s Office will be present to provide safety and security for the inmates. The Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT) will reimburse the county for the cost of sheriff personnel assigned to the duty.

“We know what this partnership brings and want to make sure we keep the City of Jackson and Hinds County beautiful,” said Jones. “We are ready to start working and ready for travelers to see us out working with inmates to keep our highways clean.”

Simmons said the program will primarily focus on the interstate system throughout the City of Jackson, and reminds the public that law enforcement will continue holding drivers accountable if caught littering. Drivers are advised to slow down and be alert for litter removal crews…
