Oregon woodworker hopes to restore rare trees from his small mill

After a long career holding different roles in the timber industry, Elmira resident Rod Jacobs has devoted the latest chapter in his life to restoring rare tree species and making the music instrument and timber industries more sustainable.

As a young man, Jacobs worked various blue collar jobs in factories, farming and milling. Then, in the 1990s, he pivoted to a career in armored transport where he exported over 2,000 hardwood logs. Jacobs hopes to atone for that period in his life with his current work.

“I have a debt to the planet of about 2,000 really nice trees,” Jacobs said. “I saw 100 of those returned but I still owe about 1,900.”…
