Nancy Guthrie, mother of NBC’s Today show co-anchor Savannah Guthrie, has been missing for over four months since she vanished from her Tucson, Arizona home on January 31. Despite an extensive investigation, no suspects have been identified, and the case remains unresolved.
Early in the search, reports emerged about ransom notes allegedly connected to Nancy’s disappearance. However, investigators have neither confirmed nor dismissed these claims.
A man was arrested on February 5 for impersonating an abductor and attempting to extort money from the Guthrie family. The Pima County Sheriff’s Department confirmed they received ransom tips and passed all information to FBI detectives involved in the case.
Journalist Brian Entin, who has been closely following the investigation, recently shared his thoughts during an interview on NewsNation. When asked about his theory, Entin acknowledged shifting perspectives: initially, he considered a ransom scenario where the abductor might have intended to return Nancy safely but something went wrong.
Yet, he now finds that theory less plausible due to the lack of direct communication, proof of life, or a clear method for ransom payment. “Truthfully, I still think it’s just a mystery.
I really don’t know,” Entin admitted.
In a related development, search volunteers responded to an anonymous tip claiming Nancy might have been buried in a mass grave in the Mariposa region of Mexico. The group, including members of the Buscando Corazones collective, conducted a search and uncovered over 25 unmarked graves. While they recovered the remains of at least 32 individuals in recent months, Nancy’s remains were not found.
Ramona Guadalupe Ayala Ortiz, leader of Buscando Corazones, stated the team remains committed to locating Nancy and other missing persons. Meanwhile, the Pima County Sheriff’s Department issued a statement on June 11 addressing the tip, noting they have not been contacted by Mexican authorities regarding this lead. The department emphasized that the investigation remains active, and they will continue pursuing any credible information related to Nancy Guthrie’s disappearance.
