Indiana has tied a historic tornado record after an extraordinary stretch of severe weather across the state. According to the National Weather Service, Indiana has now recorded 72 confirmed tornadoes in 2026, matching the all-time state record set in 2011. It’s the highest annual tornado total since official records began in 1950. Much of the damage came during an exceptionally active month of June. So far, 53 tornadoes have been confirmed this month alone, shattering previous June records and accounting for nearly three-quarters of the year’s total. The record could soon stand alone. National Weather Service meteorologists are continuing to survey and analyze recent storm damage, and officials say additional tornadoes may still be confirmed. If just one more twister is added to the count this year, 2026 will become Indiana’s most active tornado year on record.
