As electric rides grow in popularity, officials push safety education

Iowa (KCRG) – As electric-powered bikes become more common across Iowa, city leaders and health experts in Eastern Iowa are reminding riders that not every electric ride is considered an e-bike — and knowing the difference could help prevent injuries.

The City of Iowa City is working with surrounding communities to educate the public about the distinction between e-bikes and e-motos, which are faster, more powerful electric motorcycles. While legal e-bikes can be used on many bike trails and some sidewalks, e-motos are not permitted on city trails or sidewalks.

“All the e-assist devices are really appealing and so I understand why people use them, but I think that people just need to be aware that they are heavier, they are more powerful, and that they have a unique set of risks with them that people just need to know about,” said Sarah Walz, Iowa City’s Associate Transportation Manager…
