The Department of Justice says a Cedar Rapids man defrauded the Department of Veterans Affairs in claiming he provided home health care to veterans, but didn’t–and spent the tax money on gambling debts. Jacob Hughes and his company Hughes Home Care are accused of defrauding the Department of Veterans Affairs of more than $350,000. It’s part of the federal government’s crackdown that found more than $6 billion in false claims. Hughes allegedly filed claims for multiple veterans but never provided the home health care in those claims.
One person is dead after a house fire on the 12 hundred block of Parriott Street in Aplington. The Butler County Emergency Management Agency says firefighters found someone inside who later died. It’s not clear if their death is related to the fire. The State Fire Marshal is investigating…
