Red, white, and moo: Coburg Cow joins in 250 festivities with patriotic colors

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) – Red, white, and moo? The iconic Coburg Cow, Bessie, a beloved landmark in West Ashley, is joining the 250 festivities with a patriotic makeover!

The Coburg Cow is painted with an American flag draped over her back to celebrate the Fourth of July, specifically America 250.

“Bessie the Coburg Cow” has been a local mascot for Charlestonians since 1959 and serves as an alert for storm threats in the area, with her getting lowered from the platform if a major hurricane is planned to strike. Locals know when Bessie’s down, a bad storm is coming.

Coburg Dairy was bought out by Borden Dairy in 2011. However, Borden Dairy ensured that Bessie would stay in place, even after the company closed its North Charleston location in 2022…
