$1M grant to help cleanup contaminated former Kalamazoo paper mill site for housing units

KALAMAZOO, Mich. — A former Kalamazoo paper mill site is being cleaned up with help from a $1 million state grant, clearing the way for affordable housing units intended for people in Kalamazoo County’s problem-solving courts.

The Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) is providing the grant for the 6.6 acre property on Belford Street in the Edison Neighborhood, which now sits empty after years of discussions about how to reuse the site. The development will become the William Schma House, a 48-unit apartment project that also provides support for people recovering from drug and alcohol addiction.
