Keeping pets safe during dangerous heat wave in central Alabama

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) – Three straight days of dangerous heat are expected to hit central Alabama next week, and a Birmingham veterinarian says pets face risks just like their owners.

Heat index values are expected to climb well above 100 degrees Monday through Wednesday, with humidity compounding the danger.

“Really anything over 80 degrees can be dangerous to dogs,” said Dr. Claire Bellman, DVM, of Birmingham Animal Hospital. “Things that people don’t realize, dogs expel heat by panting. And so heat is really dangerous, but humidity is almost more dangerous.”…
