Upatoi residents file lawsuit to block Columbus data center overlay district

COLUMBUS, Ga. (WTVM) – A group of Upatoi landowners has filed a lawsuit to block an overlay district approved by Columbus City Council on June 16 that would establish safeguards for tech companies, including data centers, looking to locate in the Columbus area.

The group, Keep It Rural LLC, is seeking to stop the measure, which passed amid protests. Demonstrators filled city council chambers wearing red shirts and carrying signs that read “no data center.”

Mayor responds to concerns

Columbus Mayor Skip Henderson said the council is actively researching the potential impacts of a data center on residents, including water usage, utility costs and noise pollution.

“It certainly would pay for huge projects that come come. And it could pay for huge projects and maybe a reduction or modification in Columbus’ tax structure,” Henderson said…
