Coalition sounds alarm as new homes proposed in flood-prone Staten Island redevelopment zone

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — A coalition of community organizations and local residents gathered at Staten Island Borough Hall at 11 a.m. on Friday for a guided walking tour of Staten Island’s North Shore to discuss concerns about current redevelopment proposals and opportunities to improve waterfront access.

New Yorkers for Parks and the Play Fair Coalition hosted the event in partnership with the Staten Island Urban Center and nearly 20 local organizations, including the St. George Civic Association, Staten Island Chamber of Commerce and Waterfront Alliance.

The event comes as advocates raise questions about NYCEDC’s $400 million North Shore Action Plan, which promises to create 2,400 new homes and more than 20 acres of public open space along the harbor waterfront. Following NYCEDC’s announcement last fall of additional proposed open space and housing at Empire Outlets and the former New York Wheel site, the Staten Island Urban Center issued a critical assessment titled Rethinking the North Shore: Climate Risks | Community, which provided a basis for discussions during the tour…
