LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WKYT) – Magnitude went wire-to-wire, leading at every call Saturday in the $2 million Stephen Foster at Churchill Downs, holding off Baeza by 1 1/4 lengths on a sloppy track in the race billed as the “Summer Showdown” for older horses.
Ridden by Jose Ortiz for Hall of Fame trainer Steve Asmussen and owner/breeder Winchell Thoroughbreds, Magnitude set steady fractions and finished 1 1/8 miles in 1:48.03 despite briefly breaking through the starting gate before the field was loaded.
Reigning Horse of the Year and Kentucky Derby winner Sovereignty was four lengths back in third as the 4-5 favorite. White Abarrio was fourth and longshot Willy D’s finished fifth…
