Concerns, warning signs led to Clearwater toddler’s death: Court documents

WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) – New court documents detail concerns and warning signs in the months leading up to the death of a 15-month-old Clearwater boy last August.

The boy’s mother, Shanna Whitton, faces charges, including first-degree murder, in connection with his death.

On an emergency call last summer, the toddler, Matthew Jon Whitton, was found unresponsive after he reportedly choked on food. He died a few days after being rushed to the hospital in extremely critical condition.

His autopsy revealed that the circumstances surrounding his death went beyond choking. The autopsy revealed that his cause of death was complications of a serious brain injury from a lack of oxygen or blood flow (hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy due to an intentional asphyxiation).
