Police: Current pushed submerged car 30 yards away from crash site

PAWTUCKET, R.I. (WPRI) — For Pawtucket Police Chief Tina Goncalves, Sunday night’s deadly crash into the Seekonk River was a first.

“We have had water rescues in the city, but we’ve never had someone drown in a vehicle, at least in the time that I’ve been here,” Goncalves told 12 News.

Officers were called to the fishing pier off Taft Street after a passerby reported that a car went into the water Sunday night.

Police confirmed a nearby jet skier attempted to assist the driver and passengers inside the vehicle, but couldn’t because the car was sinking too fast…
