Young Utah girl with Spinal Muscular Atrophy becomes honorary Monster Jam driver

SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4) — A young girl from Utah with Spinal Muscular Atrophy was named an honorary Monster Jam driver on Wednesday.

Monster Jam partnered with Magic Wheelchair to give 9-year-old Kenadee Marples, who has Spinal Muscular Atrophy Type 1, a surprise. They created a “Sparkle Smash” themed wheelchair costume for her and made her an honorary Monster Jam driver.

The costume was unveiled on Wednesday morning at Rice Eccles Stadium ahead of Monster Jam World Finals XXV, the biggest Monster Jam event of the year.

“Kenadee is a big fan of [Sparkle Smash],” said Charlotte Harris, Kenadee’s mother. “On a daily basis [Kenadee] is riding up and down the street in her wheelchair going fast. So, now that she’s got a monster truck attached to it, she’ll probably draw more eyes in.”

Harris expressed gratitude for the wheelchair costume that Kenadee received. She said that her daughter is a fighter who defied her life expectancy of only two years. Harris sees every extra day she has with her as a blessing, and small gifts like the costume make their time together even more special…
