OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) – Just 28% of Nebraska fourth graders are proficient at reading, according to the Nation’s Report Card from 2024. With school out for the summer, educators are promoting new strategies to keep kids on track.
Susan Morice, a teacher at Meadows Elementary, said her approach to reading instruction shifted after attending a Nebraska-based teaching workshop.
“As a former kindergarten teacher, I thought I knew how to teach kids to read,” Morice said. “If you don’t stay fresh and you don’t stay educated — sometimes the research doesn’t exactly — it progresses and your professional development does not.”
