Mathews County Museum displays diorama of Battle of Cricket Hill

MATHEWS COUNTY, Va. (WAVY) — As we celebrate the 250th anniversary of America, we want to take you to Mathews County, where the Battle of Cricket Hill was fought on Gwynns Island on July 9th, 1776.

Though not as well known as other revolutionary battles, it was an important chapter in our nation’s path to independence. It is where Lord Dunmore, the Royal Governor of Virginia, was pushed out of the state by the American Militia.
