What began as a routine storm cleanup in Ohio’s Hocking Hills State Park quickly became one of the most extraordinary workplace survival stories of the year.
Philip Pohle, a 32-year-old facilities and maintenance worker with the Ohio Department of Natural Resources and father of two, suffered an injury known as an “internal decapitation” after a freak accident while clearing fallen trees in March 2026. Doctors say the injury is exceptionally rare and is often fatal.
Pohle was operating a front loader to remove storm debris during an intensely windy day, with gusts reportedly reaching 60 mph. As he pushed a large tree measuring roughly six to eight inches in diameter, the trunk unexpectedly shifted backward inside the loader’s bucket. At the same time, his foot became trapped on the accelerator pedal, preventing the machine from stopping. The loader continued moving forward, forcing the tree into his upper body and neck.
Pohle later recalled hearing a sickening pop and crack as tremendous pressure built in his neck. Believing he was dying, he said his thoughts immediately turned to his family and the possibility that he might never see his children again.
Seconds That Saved His Life
The outcome could easily have been fatal were it not for the swift actions of his coworkers. After rushing to the scene, they stabilized his neck with a brace while using a chainsaw to cut away the tree that had pinned him. Emergency responders intubated him before transporting him to a nearby hospital, after which he was transferred to Grant Medical Center in Columbus for specialist care…
