Father and son arrested in separate Des Moines OWI incidents

DES MOINES, Iowa — The Des Moines Police Department says two separate OWI investigations led to the arrests of a father and son on the city’s southside late Sunday night.

The first incident happened just after 10:30 p.m. in the 700 block of Loomis Avenue, according to Sgt. Paul Parizek, Public Information Officer for the DMPD. Officers responding to a report of a vehicle stopped on the wrong side of the road located a vehicle that had left the road and hit a fire hydrant.

Police said 28-year-old Deonta Lemont Stigler Jr., the driver, was found asleep in the driver’s seat of the vehicle. After officers woke him, they saw evidence of impairment and drug possession. Sgt. Parizek said Stigler Jr. tried to flee, but officers caught him, and he was taken into custody without further incident.

Stigler Jr. is charged with:

  • OWI – 2nd Offense
  • Driving While Barred
  • Possession Of A Controlled Substance
  • Interference With Official Acts
  • Failure To Maintain Control

In a separate incident the same night, Sgt. Parizek said 49-year-old Deonta Lemont Stigler was observed driving a vehicle recklessly near SW 9th Street and Watrous Avenue just after 11:00 p.m. An officer attempted a traffic stop, but Stigler fled, and a pursuit began that ended in the 1000 block of Randolph Avenue.

According to Sgt. Parizek, police observed signs of impairment in Stigler. He was arrested and charged with:

  • OWI-3rd Offense
  • Eluding
  • Driving While Barred
  • Reckless Driving
