Ohio gravesites of American Revolution veterans revealed after year-long project

COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) — Just over a year in the making, a statewide project has culminated in a digital tool that history lovers can use to learn more about America’s first veterans who made Ohio home.

The Revolutionary War Veterans Graves StoryMap was unveiled Saturday at the Ohio Theatre and is now publicly accessible online, America 250-Ohio announced in a news release. The site was made possible by the Ohio History Connection and nearly 600 volunteers who scoured the Buckeye State’s landscape for grave sites. See a previous story in the player above.

“What this project reveals is that Ohio’s connection to the founding of this nation is far deeper than most people realize,” said Krista Horrocks, historian, cemetery preservationist, and project manager with the Ohio History Connection. “These veterans didn’t just fight for independence; they helped build Ohio. Their stories are here, in our communities, waiting to be found, and now anyone can find them.”

On the interactive StoryMap website, viewers will find a map, timeline, photographs and stories documenting Revolutionary War veterans buried across Ohio. The site contains nearly 4,500 individual graves and more than 8,800 images of headstones or other markers…
