NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner has ruled 16-year-old Marwa Barakzai’s death an accidental drowning.
Barakzai, a Menchville High School student, disappeared on March 19 after getting off a school bus. According to police, she asked her school bus driver to drop her off at a different location than usual.

In a press conference, Newport News Police Chief Steve Drew announced that Barakzai’s body was located April 6 in Mariners’ Lake. She was identified through dental records.
