COLUMBUS, Ohio (WJW) — Health officials in Ohio confirm 177 cases of cyclosporiasis, a gastrointestinal illness caused by a microscopic parasite that can lead to severe diarrhea.
The Ohio Department of Health said 171 of the reported cases occurred in June, with most happening after June 20. Twenty-eight Ohioans have been hospitalized.

Cyclosporiasis is caused by the parasite Cyclospora cayetanensis, which is typically spread by eating contaminated fruits and vegetables.
“Fortunately, there have been no deaths in Ohio, as is consistent with our past experiences with this illness,” Ohio Department of Health Director Dr. Bruce Vanderhoff said. “Nevertheless, this is a serious illness that can cause dehydration and require people to seek emergency medical care, and it should be taken seriously.”
