Blount County Commission advances plan to purchase 160-acre Alcoa site

BLOUNT COUNTY, Tenn. (WATE) – The plan for the City of Alcoa, City of Maryville and Blount County to acquire the160-acre Alcoa South Plant site for development is moving forward.

The plan was discussed at length during the Blount County Commission workshop on Thursday, July 9, with commissioners voting to advance the resolution to enter into an agreement with the Industrial Development Board for the purchase of the Alcoa South Plant to the full commission. The next Blount County Commission meeting is on July 16.

Part of the discussion surrounded the fact that the proposal was not approved during the budget meeting before the workshop, with Commissioner Steve Mikels challenging the validity of the resolution’s presence on the agenda. He argued that the resolution was intentionally slipped onto the agenda and described it as being “shoved down this commission’s throat.” Other commissioners pushed back, stating that the commission had agreed to discuss resolutions regardless of what happens in the budget committee.
