Landing Ceremony in Mobile commemorates Clotilda survivors

MOBILE, Ala. (WKRG) — Descendants of the last known slave ship to come to America honor the Clotilda’s legacy with a weekend of events. Members of the Clotilda Descendants Association (CDA) hosted their annual landing ceremony along the Mobile River.

With reverence and humility, a wreath was laid in the water at the foot of the Africatown Bridge on Saturday morning. It capped the annual landing ceremony. The event is meant to honor the 110 who survived the journey from Africa to the shores of Mobile more than 160 years ago.

“It’s a very emotional experience as a descendant to have a space to recognize where our ancestors landed and the tragedy of the journey of the Clotilda, and to reflect on these moments,” Tiffany Pogue with the CDA said.
