Northbound I-5 reopens more than 10 hours early after weekend shutdown

SEATTLE — Drivers can once again travel northbound on I-5 through Seattle after a weekend closure ended more than 10 hours ahead of schedule Sunday evening.

The Washington State Department of Transportation reopened northbound I-5 between Interstate 90 and Northeast 45th Street at about 6:30 p.m. Sunday after crews finished setting up a long-term work zone for the Revive I-5: Ship Canal Bridge Preservation project.

While the freeway is fully open, traffic across the Ship Canal Bridge is now permanently reduced to two northbound lanes through the end of 2026. During that time, crews will repair and resurface the bridge deck, replace aging expansion joints, improve drainage and complete other preservation work…
