Erie farmers market combats food insecurity with affordable local produce

One organization is doing its part to make sure Erie families don’t go hungry this summer.

Every Monday until September, the Sisters of St. Joseph Neighborhood Network is hosting the Little Italy Farmers Market on West 19th Street.

The goal is to provide fresh and affordable produce in an area that they said is experiencing more and more food scarcity.

“Food deserts within the city— so this is an initiative that we take as an organization to just try and combat that and give back to the community,” said Matthew Yelkovich, director of SSJNN gardens and greenspace. “They just love it. The flavors can’t be beat. Getting fresh local produce seasonally— you can’t do that in a lot of spaces in the city.”…
