Brooklyn distributor recalls uneviscerated smoked herring

NEW YORK (WWTI) – Total Products Distributors, based in Brooklyn, NY, has announced a recall of its 18 lb (8.165 kg) wooden cases of “Sea Star Smoked Herring” due to concerns that the fish was uneviscerated.

The affected product, which bears lot #C076135008 and UPC code 779150-747638, was distributed across New York, New Jersey and Maryland to various retail stores. The recall was prompted by routine inspections conducted by the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets, where it was determined that the product had not undergone proper evisceration before processing.The sale of uneviscerated fish is prohibited in New York as it poses a significant health risk due to the potential concentration of Clostridium botulinum spores within the fish’s viscera. This bacterium can lead to botulism poisoning, which is associated with symptoms such as dizziness, blurred vision, difficulties in speaking or swallowing, and other severe health issues, including respiratory difficulties and abdominal distension.
