Knoxville mayor talks infrastructure after major flooding near downtown

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) – Flash flooding struck Knoxville over the weekend, causing damage and cleanup across the city, as officials work to complete an inventory of the city’s stormwater infrastructure — some of which predates World War I.

Aging infrastructure under review

Mayor Indya Kincannon said the city is in the process of finalizing an inventory of all stormwater infrastructure. She said some of the city’s pipes are well over 100 years old and were not built to handle current water volumes.

“We’re in the process of finalizing an inventory of all our stormwater infrastructure,” Kincannon said. “Some of it was built pre-World War I. Some of it’s over 100 years old, well over 100 years old.”
