Scrap metal thief escapes after swimming in Schuylkill River, police say

Police are searching for a suspected scrap metal thief who they say swam in the Schuylkill River and escaped on the other side.

On Friday, July 17, at 9:29 a.m., Plymouth Township police responded to the Cleveland Cliffs Steel Plant on 900 Conshohocken Road for a report of people inside the plant stealing scrap metal.

Police then spotted a man running from the plant through the woods and continuing across the SEPTA train tracks. Police said the man then went into the Schuylkill River, exited the water on the West Conshohocken/Upper Merion side and was able to escape capture…
