DES MOINES, Iowa — The Iowa DOT says repairs are underway and the roadway could reopen later this week after a rail bridge partially collapsed on Friday.
The rail bridge, located in the 4400 block of NE 2nd Street, partially collapsed after a vacuum/pumper truck attempted to travel underneath it on Friday and exceeded the 13 ft 4 in height limit. The truck crashed into the northbound lanes, causing a partial collapse.
Following the crash, both lanes of NW 2nd Street from NW Aurora Avenue to NE Broadway Avenue were closed due to the debris and to ensure the other side of the bridge would not come down.
The Iowa Department of Transportation announced Sunday that crews had begun work to repair the bridge. Officials say once the bridge and railroad tracks are replaced, staff will inspect the roadway for damage and make any necessary repairs.
