HENDERSON, KY. (WFIE) – There’s a lot that goes into a race day at Ellis Park, besides, just the racing itself. A day at the track is a giant endeavor.
It’s a lot more than just horses breaking from the gate and running around the track, and the folks at Ellis Park have it down to a science. One of the more important jobs at the track, is that of the outriders. You’ve probably seen them, but maybe you didn’t pay them much attention. They’re the people in the red vests, riding the lead ponies.
“I think they’re definitely unsung heroes of the racing industry. They don’t get a lot of spotlight. They’re kind of the police of the race track. They make sure everyone’s doing what they’re supposed to, everyone’s safe, which is very important to us,” said Erin McElwee, Ellis Park director of racing facilities and simulcast operations…
