AKRON, Ohio — In 2024, 120 people died of accidental drownings in Ohio, according to Centers for Disease Contro; and Prevention data. Nationwide, about 4,000 people accidentally drown every year. That averages around 11 deaths a day.
Children face the highest risk of drowning, and that number increases to 40-times more likely if the child’s been diagnosed with autism. A Northeast, Ohio organization focused on the autism community has a program to make sure kids diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder understand water safety.
