Heat dome brings dangerous conditions to West Tennessee. Here’s what you should know

JACKSON, Tenn. (WBBJ) – Dangerous heat is settling in, and it’s not just the temperature, it’s the heat index that can turn deadly fast. Tennesseans can expect highs around 95 to 98 degrees, but with humidity, the heat index could hit 112 to 115. That’s a dangerous level of heat stress, especially if you’re outside for long periods of time.

This weather we’re experiencing is due to a heat dome covering our area with atmospheric conditions trapping heat creating high temperatures.

“If you have to be outside, I recommend taking frequent breaks. You want to hydrate well, not just with water but also electrolytes and you want to do that the day before. If you’re already behind on your fluids the day that you’re out in the heat, it’s hard to catch up so staying ahead of that on hydration, taking breaks, wearing cool clothes and just being mindful of how you feel,” said Jana Compton, Madison County Fire Department PIO.

Also remember to check on older adults, anyone living alone, and people with chronic conditions. Even short exposure can be dangerous, especially in homes without reliable air conditioning…
