LAFAYETTE, LA. (KLFY) — Lafayette police officer honored with the Lafayette Police Department’s Life Saving Award after responding to an attempted suicide and saved a man from making a fatal decision.
According to Lafayette Police Department (LPD), Officer Johnny Monson arrived to the scene after police received a call from a man attempting to commit suicide by jumping from the Ambassador Caffery Bridge onto I-10 on May 18. Monson blocked the roadway of Ambassador Caffery Bridge and notified officers on the way that the male was straddling the outer cement wall of the bridge over I-10.
Monson continued trying to speak with the man while waiting for other officers arrived and shut down I-10 and Ambassador Caffery Parkway. Once a perimeter was established officers said they contacted the man through a loud speaker where the man requested to speak with Monson…
