Community gathers in Overland to honor immigrant couple killed after returning to Guatemala

OVERLAND, Mo. — Dozens of people gathered Sunday evening in Overland to remember Glendy Gonzales De La Cruz and Nixon Perez Paz, an immigrant couple who advocates said were killed after returning to Guatemala.

The vigil, organized by the Missouri Workers Center and Fuerza, brought community members, educators and local leaders together in the Overland Community Center parking lot to honor the couple’s lives and call attention to the dangers immigrants and asylum seekers face after being forced to return to their home countries.

“Support all of those and all of us who call this city our home — whether we are immigrants or not,” one speaker told the crowd before attendees applauded…
