BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — The Buffalo Zoo welcomed an endangered antelope calf into the world last month, helping preserve the species with an estimated 100 left in their native habitat of North Africa.
The addax calf — a type of antelope — was born to parents Patricia and Dune on July 4. Zoo leaders said the newborn is doing “incredibly well,” mingling with the herd and running with energy around their barn behind the scenes.
Visitors will be able to see the calf in the addax habitat on most mornings starting Aug. 5.
The new calf is the 25th addax born at the zoo since 1991. Leaders said their population is much higher in zoos across the U.S., Europe and Asia thanks to programs like the Association of Zoos and Aquariums’ Species Survival Plan.
