BUNCOMBE COUNTY, N.C. (FOX Carolina) – The Buncombe County District Attorney’s Office announced Tuesday that Asheville police officers were justified in using firearms against a knife-wielding suspect on June 7.
Officials said that after reviewing body-worn camera video and documentary evidence provided by the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation (NCSBI), it was determined that the officer-involved shooting at Westmont Commons apartments on Chamberlain Drive was a defensive use of force and the officers will not be charged.
The district attorney’s office said that the Asheville Police Department responded to a call regarding a subject armed with a knife. Upon arrival, officers encountered Curtis Kavanaugh Zane, 27, who advanced aggressively while holding an 8-inch kitchen knife above his head.
