NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, S.C (WBTW) — Boardwalk Billy’s in North Myrtle Beach has become the first official restaurant to partner with a Horry County program that recycles oyster shells to help rebuild South Carolina’s oyster reefs. The initiative keeps thousands of shells out of landfills while restoring the local marine environment.
The initiative, supported by the Horry County Stormwater Department, aims to improve local water quality while encouraging more businesses to recycle oyster shells instead of throwing them away.
The recycling process begins inside the restaurant where oysters are shucked for customers. Whitney Prince, general manager of Boardwalk Billy’s, says staff collects the empty oyster shells instead of throwing them away.
