FRESNO, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) – A growing scam is conning local families out of thousands of dollars, and the Fresno County Sheriff’s Office says the scammers asking for payment in gift cards is the big giveaway.
“I think everybody’s trust level nowadays should be extremely low,” said Tony Botti with the Fresno County Sheriff’s Office.

The Fresno County Sheriff’s Office says scammers are posing as high-ranking officers to steal money from local families.
“Basically, they’re telling them, ‘Hey, we know that your brother, your sister, your mom, dad, they’re in jail. They’re eligible to get out. In order to do this, I’m going to help you through the bond process. You could just pay this amount of money and we’re going to get them fitted with an ankle monitor,’” Botti explained…
