More than roller derby: Inside Toledo’s Glass City Rollers

Teachers. Nurses. Parents. Young professionals. At the start of practice, their day jobs disappear beneath helmets and derby names.

For the next two hours, they’re simply teammates, united by a shared passion for roller derby, a sport that has largely slipped out of Toledo’s spotlight despite the dedication of the members keeping it alive.

Founded in 2007, Glass City Rollers is Toledo’s first and only roller derby league. While the team once hosted home bouts that drew local crowds, rising venue costs and the coronavirus pandemic left the league without a permanent home. Today, the team practices at Graystone Banquet Hall in Perrysburg while working to rebuild its visibility and one day bring home bouts back to Toledo…
