Ørsted has commissioned a 250 MW/500 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) in Fort Bend County, Texas, marking the commercial operation of one of the company’s largest standalone storage assets in the United States. The project is co-located with Ørsted’s Old 300 Solar Center and expands the company’s U.S. onshore renewable energy portfolio.
The battery system is designed to store excess electricity generated by the adjacent solar facility and discharge it during periods of higher demand, improving grid flexibility and supporting the integration of renewable energy. The project participates in the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) market, where battery storage plays an increasing role in balancing the state’s rapidly growing renewable generation fleet.
Ørsted said the facility strengthens the reliability of the Texas electricity system by providing fast-response energy storage services while making more efficient use of existing renewable generation assets.
