Officials investigate attempted homicide on officer at Kern Valley State Prison

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — Officials are investigating an attack on a peace officer at the Kern Valley State Prison as an attempted homicide.

Investigators with the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation said that Derrick S. Smith, who is incarcerated at the state prison, was seen in possession of an “improvised weapon” on the morning of Aug. 6.

After ignoring multiple orders from correctional staff to get down, Smith allegedly ran toward custody staff with the weapon “without warning or provocation,” investigators said…
