KALAMAZOO, Mich. (WOOD) — The West Nile viruswas found in a dead red-tailed hawk in Kalamazoo County, prompting health officials to advise people be cautious around mosquitos.
While no human cases of the virus have been reported in the area, the West Nile virus remains the leading cause of mosquito-borne disease in the United States, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
The virus is most commonly spread through a bite from an infected mosquito that has fed off of an infected bird.

As of Friday, Michigan Department of Health and Human Services data shows, a total of six birds and one squirrel have tested positive for West Nile around Michigan. The state has also counted 29 mosquito pools that tested positive for the virus…
