ROANOKE, Va. (WFXR) — Sweet corn is a summer tradition in Virginia, but there were questions about this year’s crop because of the drought that has gripped the Commonwealth for a year.
While those concerns were valid, agriculture experts say corn farmers in Southwest and Central Virginia should have fair to good harvests, especially if they had access to irrigation.
As for prices, inflation has also hit sweet corn. In a look at prices around the Roanoke region, you can find unhusked sweet corn selling in a lot of places two ears for a dollar. In years past, you could expect to spend a dollar for three ears. Despite that, sales have been good.

When buying sweet corn in the husk, here are things to look for:
- Green husks, the brighter the better
- Moist brown or yellow silk at the top, black tarry silk should be rejected
- Feel the ear for fullness with firm, plump kernels
