South Carolina tax-free weekend draws shoppers as some parents question timing

NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) — South Carolina’s tax-free weekend is underway, giving families a chance to save on back-to-school essentials, but for some Lowcountry parents, the savings come after their children have already returned to the classroom.

The annual sales tax holiday began Friday and runs through Sunday. Qualifying items, including school supplies, computers, printers and clothing, can be purchased without paying state or local sales tax.

At Tanger Outlets Charleston in North Charleston, shoppers took advantage of the tax-free weekend alongside the outlet’s back-to-school event. Some families said the combination of store discounts and the sales tax exemption made it a good time to check items off their lists…
