The Villages is working hard to find and recover money from drivers who crash into gates.
Most gate strikes occur during daylight hours. Officials attribute the crashes primarily to driver carelessness, tailgating, speeding and a failure to brake in a timely manner.
The problem is widespread. In the 2024-2025 fiscal year, there were 1,481 gate strikes reviewed by the District Office. Through the third quarter of the 2025-2026 fiscal year, officials have already recorded 1,085 strikes.
