Cases of cyclosporiasis, an intestinal illness often associated with contaminated fresh produce, continue to increase across Louisiana, prompting state health officials to remind residents about symptoms and steps they can take to reduce their risk.
As of August 5, Louisiana had reported 125 cases, including six people who required hospitalization. East Baton Rouge and Lafayette parishes currently have the highest number of reported cases. According to the Louisiana Department of Health’s new public dashboard, Red River Parish is also among the parishes reporting cases, with between one and four cases shown on the latest map.
Cyclospora infection is caused by a microscopic parasite and is commonly associated with eating contaminated fresh produce that is consumed raw, including leafy greens, herbs, berries and other fruits and vegetables.
