According to the Sacramento Police Department, officers were on scene of a call regarding a suspect with outstanding warrants who had lit a fire in the 20 block of La Fresa Court. The department said the suspect had armed himself with a knife and that crisis negotiators were on scene attempting to secure a peaceful surrender, while asking the public to avoid the area. Officers initially responded around 6:45 p.m. Monday to the apartment complex to serve or investigate the warrant before the fire was set and the suspect grabbed the knife, according to ABC10.

The armed man took position on the roof of an apartment building at 25 La Fresa Court while Sacramento Fire Department crews worked to battle the blaze, according to CBS News Sacramento. The Sacramento Fire Department said the suspect’s presence on scene restricted firefighters’ access to certain areas of the burning complex, according to the same CBS News Sacramento report, explaining why crews were unable to fully extinguish the flames while the standoff continued.
