A statewide search for an 11-day-old infant ended safely along Interstate 40 in northern Arizona after a Navajo County sheriff’s deputy spotted the vehicle authorities were looking for, pulled it over and found the newborn crying in the backseat.
FOX 10 Phoenix reporter Steve Nielsen said the baby had been taken from Surprise, Arizona, by his father, who police said did not have custodial rights and did not have the mother’s permission to take the child. The search covered more than 170 miles before Deputy Ryan Larson located the white Chevrolet Suburban near Williams.
What followed was not only a successful recovery, but also a quieter moment that drew widespread attention: while other officers questioned the adults in the vehicle, Larson picked up the tiny infant and fed him from a bottle on the side of the highway.
