Woman accused of vandalizing Kern County Veterans Memorial scheduled for competency hearing

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — A 33-year-old woman accused of destroying a decorative glass sculpture at the center of the Kern County Veterans Memorial has been scheduled for a hearing to determine if she’s competent to stand trial.

Court records show Marina Leanne Smith is expected to be examined by a clinical psychologist ahead of her next hearing on Sept. 8. A judge will review the psychologist’s report and determine if Smith understands the proceedings against her and can assist her attorney in preparing a defense.

If found incompetent, criminal proceedings would be suspended and Smith would be sent to a state hospital where efforts would be me made to restore her to competency. If found competent, the case would proceed…
